Guinness Under the Sea

Dublin’s Guinness Storehouse like a lot of breweries features a tour for those who want to learn more about beer and/ or want to drink in the middle of the day. It runs for around 12 euros and while otherwise being fairly standard (malt hops yeast water) comes with one pretty major perk. At the end of the tour participants get a free beer at the famous Gravity Bar. At seven stories the Gravity Bar sits above its surroundings (FYI Dublin’s tallest building is Google Europe’s (GOOG) 15-storey headquarters) and provides a great panoramic view of the city. And ...

Verizon Just Made Things Worse

As airlines and cell phone providers continue their race to see who could screw over their customers more Verizon (VZ) just pulled the equivalent to putting coach seats in First Class. Executive Vice President and CFO Fran Shammo announced that the provider will no longer be granting customers unlimited data when they upgrade to a 4G LTE smartphone -- even if they were grandfathered in. Although the carrier allowed loyal and dedicated customers the "privilege" to experience the full web -- with all its streaming and increasing file sizes -- uninhibited and without worry of data caps or penalty ...

Virgin Atlantic Unveils In-Flight Cell Phone Calls

Last week we tried to figure out if hiring four designers to spend six weeks making ice cubes to the exact dimensions of one’s face is a sign of overwhelming narcissism or just a good sense of humor. The jury’s still out on that one. Meanwhile Virgin Atlantic has announced a new plan to make passenger experiences more -- or less if passengers like quiet -- enjoyable. The airline will now allow customers to make cell phone calls on certain transatlantic flights. According to Popular Science people flying on Virgin’s new Airbus A330-300 from London to New York will ...

Skechers Ain't That Great for Your Body, FTC Finds

Remember a few years back when so-called toning shoes were all the fashion fitness rage? All sorts of brands came out with sneakers and flip flops that made some highly dubious claims about the weight loss and shaping results of its shoes simply by stepping foot in them.   Well now customers who bought into one company’s sketchy product line are getting a refund. In a settlement finalized today with the Federal Trade Commission and 42 states with class action lawsuits Skechers (SKX) will pay out $40 million to consumers who purchased its Shape-ups Tone-ups Toners and Resistance Runner ...

Black Boxes in Cars Will Likely Become Mandatory

Cue the Big Brother talk. This year’s transportation bill has a section mandating the installation of event recorders or so-called black boxes in all new cars by 2015. According to Autoblog.com the Senate has already passed the bill and the House is expected to pass it as well. To assuage at least some privacy concerns the Senate bill also makes it clear that any data taken from the boxes is the property of car owners unless there are extenuating circumstances. Car and Driver calls the language in the Senate bill vague and quotes it saying that the boxes “must ...

High-Fructose Corn Syrup Can Make You Both Fat and Stupid

The laughable habit of ordering a huge fast-food meal and washing it down with a diet soda might actually be smarter than it sounds if the results of a new study published Tuesday are any indication. The nutrition industry's favorite bogeyman high-fructose corn syrup took yet another massive hit when a UCLA study in the Journal of Physiology showed the ubiquitous additive makes lab rats less clever. The study addressed the interaction of omega-3 fatty acids and high fructose intake. It found that rats fed a diet deficient in omega-3s had difficulty navigating a maze they'd already been trained ...

The Most Annoying Toy of All Time Is Back

No. No. Just close your eyes and maybe this will go away.    Just when parents were getting over the 1998 nightmare it's back. Tiger Electronics a wing of megalith toy maker Hasbro Inc. (HAS) has leaked a single foreboding photograph of the successor to one of the most popular (and terrible) toys of all time. Take a deep breath. The Furby is back according to the Daily Mail.   Oh do you not remember? The time long ago when lines of consumers didn't snake around Apple (AAPL) stores in anticipation of the next iPad but toy stores waiting for the ...
